Popular East Bay pizza chain to open new location in downtown Livermore

Deep dish pizza is coming back to downtown Livermore.

Zachary’s Chicago Pizza is expanding for just the sixth time in its 42-year history, as the beloved East Bay pizza shop plans to open a Livermore location this fall.

“Livermore is a really cool city,” said Leandra Schuler, the chief operating officer at Zachary’s. “It has that Main Street feel with a lot of small and independent businesses. There have been some good restaurants and bakeries opening in the area. They’re very active in their community.”

The new Zacharay’s will take over the former space of Patxi’s Pizza on First Street. Patxi’s also served deep dish pizza but closed last summer after an 11-year run in downtown Livermore.

Taking over a pre-existing pizza joint will make it a simpler transition for Zachary’s, which has been 100% employee owned since 2003.

“We’ve kind of typically been a slow growth company, so we like to think about opportunities that will benefit the 200 employee owners,” Schuler said. “We also believe in not stretching ourselves too thin because we want to continue to do the best we can. This location just ticked some boxes that felt good for us and everybody is excited about it.”

The location fits about 80 people inside and another 40 on the outdoor patio.

Zachary’s also applied for a full liquor license and hopes to become the third location with a full bar, serving fun cocktails, beer and wine alongside the traditional deep-dish pizza menu.

“We might tweak the menu a little, have a special appetizer or pizza, but we’ll stick to doing what we do best,” Schuler said.
