Dublin played the role of spoiler Wednesday night.
The Gaels, ranked 16th in the Bay Area News Group top 20, edged No. 15 Alhambra 6-5 in the Bulldogs’ own Alhambra Easter Tournament. A five-run top of the sixth for the Gaels (14-2) wiped out a 3-1 Alhambra lead. Dublin added another run in the seventh for the final score.
It was a pitcher’s duel in the early going, with the Bulldogs (10-4) clinging to a 1-0 lead through four. Diego Mata’s double accounted for the only run.
Alhambra widened the lead to 3-1 in the fifth, with an RBI double from Ismael Rivera Parra.
Dublin then erupted for five runs in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh. Singles by Matthew Phelps, Brendan Moddelmog and Brandt Nunemacher keyed the big inning.
Phelps also came up big on the mound, pitching the final 2⅓ innings for Dublin. The sophomore allowed one hit, one unearned run and struck out three while improving his record to 2-0. He also has five saves.
California 1, No. 10 Clayton Valley 0
Ryken Redondo pitched five innings of shutout relief to lead the Grizzlies (6-7) past Clayton Valley at the Alhambra Tournament. Redondo, who got his first win of the season, allowed one hit, walked two and had four strikeouts.
Ethan Rye’s sacrifice fly in the fifth accounted for the only run of the game. Grayden Wright scored for Cal.
There were only five hits in the contest, three by the Grizzlies. Angelo Sherman had two hits for California, Vince Della Santina had both hits for Clayton Valley. The Ugly Eagles have lost two in a row after a 12-0 start.
Corona del Sol-Tempe, Az. 10, No. 2 Granada 3
The Matadors ran into a buzzsaw Wednesday in the first round of the National High School Invitational in Cary, North Carolina.
The tournament, now in its 12th season (not consecutively), consists of 16 of the best high school teams from all over the country. Southern California schools have won nine championships. Florida teams have won twice.
Granada (10-3) trailed 7-2 after four innings, closed the gap to 7-3 with a run in the sixth, then gave up three runs in the seventh. Tyler Kennedy had two of the Mats’ six hits. Mikey Boyd, Peyton Richards and Joey Marasco each scored runs for Granada.
Freshman outfielder Ben Jacobus knocked in three runs for the Aztecs (14-3), whose alums include 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall.
No. 17 Castro Valley 7, Tesoro-Rancho Santa Margarita 1
Alex Nicol began the scoring with a solo home run in the fourth inning and Braden Spade finished with a solo shot in the sixth as the Trojans improved to 11-3 with the non-league win.
Castro Valley scored three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to break up what was a tight pitching duel. Nicol had a single in addition to his home run. Spade, who had a double to go along with his homer, now has nine extra base hits and a .347 batting average.
Scott Baldwin worked the first six innings for the Trojans, allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out five.
Tesoro is 3-13.
Piedmont 7, Head-Royce 5
Markos Lagios laced a two-run double in the sixth that broke a 5-5 tie in the Highlanders’ win over Head-Royce at the Concord Classic. The hit by the senior catcher/third baseman capped a four-run inning for Piedmont, which improved to 10-4 on the season. The Jayhawks are 7-4.
Head-Royce had a 10-6 advantage in hits, but the Highlanders were able to take advantage of four extra base hits (three doubles, one triple), five walks and a hit batsmen.
Lagios was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, lifting his season average to .362. Enzo Ong, the third of four Piedmont pitchers, got the win.
Head-Royce had three triples. Sophomore Davis Lynch tripled and singled, scored twice and drove in two runs. Another Jayhawks sophomore, shortstop Graham Sanger, had three hits.
San Leandro 5, San Lorenzo 4
The visiting Pirates took a 5-2 lead into the seventh, then held on to beat a San Lorenzo team that entered the game with only one loss in 12 games.
Lorenzo Charles drove in three runs and had two hits. Starting pitcher Sam Linnevers worked the first five innings, allowing two hits, one earned runs and striking out six. Gary Ferguson got the final two outs for the save.
San Leandro improved to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the WACC Shoreline. San Lorenzo is 2-1 in league play.
Newark Memorial 6, James Logan 5
The Cougars built a 6-1 lead through four innings, then had to sweat out two-run rallies by visiting James Logan in the fifth and seventh innings.
Andres Romo had a big afternoon for Newark Memorial, going 2-for-3 at the plate. He scored two runs and both of his hits were doubles. He also recorded the final out in the seventh for the save. Anthony Medrano and King Lopez-Archibald each had two hits for the Cougars.
Jordan Medina led the Colts with a double and single, two runs and an RBI. Newark Memorial improved to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the MVAL. James Logan is 7-7, 4-1.
Santa Teresa 2, Santa Cruz 1
Micah DeLap pitched a complete-game five-hitter as the Saints edged above .500 at 7-6 with the non-league win. DeLap walked three and struck out four. The only run he allowed, in the seventh, was unearned.
Santa Teresa won despite making five errors. The Saints scored both of their runs in the home half of the fifth. David Hall had an RBI double and Jacob Guevarra single home the other run. Santa Cruz slipped to 7-3.
Softball
No. 1 St. Francis 17, Sacred Heart Cathedral 0
Junior Hailey Nguyen threw a five-inning no-hitter for the top-ranked Lancers, who improved to 11-2 on the season and 3-0 in WCAL action.
The Oregon State commit didn’t walk anyone and struck out nine, missing a perfect game because of an error.
St. Francis scored in every inning of the game that was shortened to 4½ innings because of the one-sided score. Sophomore Peyton Tsao was the leading hitter for St. Francis, going 4-for-4 with a homer, 4 RBI and three runs scored. Isabella Sandoval also had four RBI and a homer. Ava Bulanti also knocked one out of the park for St. Francis.
Sacred Heart Cathedral’s record fell to 8-6, 1-2.
No. 3 Mitty 4, No. 8 St. Ignatius 0
Monarchs’ junior Kyleigh Mace ran her record to 6-1 by throwing a two-hitter. The BYU commit walked one and had eight strikeouts.
The only run Mace needed came in the second when Olivia Anderson singled for the first of her two RBI. Mitty added three more runs in the fourth, two on a double by Gracie Giovacchini. Freshman Rylie Hicks had three hits for Mitty.
The Monarchs improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the WCAL. SI is 9-4, 0-3.
No. 4 Notre Dame-Belmont 3, Notre Dame-San Jose 1
The Regents gave Notre Dame-Belmont a scare, scoring a run in the fifth and making it stand up until the Tigers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh.
Allison Lui was the star of the game for the Tigers, going the distance on the mound and hitting a key single in the seventh. The only run allowed by Lui was unearned. She walked one and struck out 13. Juliette Ramirez tripled in the seventh for the Tigers.
A double by U’ilani Wells led to Notre Dame-San Jose’s run.
No. 5 Mills 9, Half Moon Bay 0
The Vikings (10-2-1) scored in every inning in a game called after 4½ innings.
Kalia Woo went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and limited Half Moon Bay (6-10) to two hits. Jazzy Maske scored two runs and had an RBI for Mills.
No. 10 Castro Valley 16, Arroyo 3
The Trojans unleashed a 19-hit attack while improving to 4-0 in the WACC Foothill and 10-3 overall.
Zaylee Gutierrez and Kailey Armstrong both drove in four runs for Castro Valley. Alanys Robertson belted two homer and scored five runs. Alicya Robertson was 3-for-5 with two rjuns scored. Arroyo saw its record even at 5-2, 2-2.
Bishop O’Dowd 20, Mt. Eden 9
The host Dragons (13-5) won a non-league slugfest that was a little closer than an 11-run margin might indicate.
Both teams scored six runs in the second, with Bishop O’Dowd leading 8-6 after the inning was complete. A three-run fourth allowed Mt. Eden to get within three runs of O’Dowd at 12-9, but the Dragons answered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. The game was stopped after the top of the fifth because of the 10-run rule.
Amiri Green led Bishop O’Dowd’s 18-hit attack with three runs, two RBI and two hits. Nora Civielli was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, and Morgan Jackson had two runs and two RBI. Tulip Barnes hit a three-run homer in her only at-bat.
Milania Hernandez led Mt. Eden (5-5) with two singles, two RBI and a run scored.
