With less than a week until England’s first match in the Euro 2024 football tournament, the squad are making their final preparations.

Today, Prince William gave them a pep talk in his role as president of the Football Association – and passed on some advice from his children too.

He canvassed Louise, Charlotte, and George on what he should say, and ‘the best bit of advice I got to ask you was to eat twice the amount you normally would eat.’

While players will no doubt need fuel to keep energy up on the pitch, it might be tricky to run if they’re doubled up with indigestion from a roast dinner.

So the heir to the throne did give a disclaimer: ‘I then had visions of all of you running around with massive great tummies and loads of stitches on the pitch so I think maybe take my youngest’s advice with a pinch of salt.’

England captain Harry Kane jokingly said: ‘We’ve got to be careful with that one. I don’t think our nutritionist will be happy with that.’

Prince William travelled to St George’s Park in Burton upon Trent to meet the squad and head coach Gareth Southgate, and present shirts to each of the 26 players selected for the team.
