Russia’s state media have rejoiced at the crushing defeat of the Tories – especially outgoing defence secretary Grant Shapps, who lost his seat.
But the Kremlin does not expect any significant change from the new Starmer government in the UK’s firm support for Ukraine in the war.
Of the Shapps’ ousting, Vladimir Kornilov, analyst at state news outlet Russia Today, said: ‘This unbridled anti-Russia campaigner nearly burst into tears during the announcement of the election results.
‘It turns out that Russophobia is not the decisive factor determining the choice of the British voter.’
The commentator added that Shapps will now have more time for his ‘beloved Ukraine’.
Kornilov also noted Reform UK leader and ‘Brexit ideologue’ Nigel Farage’s arrival as an MP.

Farage has been repeatedly criticised for his stance on Ukraine, drawing ire for saying that the West ‘provoked’ Russia to attack Ukraine.
Kornilov added: ‘Let me remind you that during the campaign they tried to present him as a “Kremlin agent”, “Putin’s poodle”, “Russian provocateur”, “enemy of Ukraine”, etc.
As for the Tories, they’ve been ‘consigned to the dustbin of history’, Kornilov said.
Sir Keir Starmer’s government ‘will probably continue its predecessors’ course of Russophobia and escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, Kornilov said, with no ‘historic’ changes expected.
Elsewhere, state news agency TASS warned that the new Keir Starmer government would not be warmer towards Moscow.
The outlet reported: ‘All parties presented their electoral programs in mid-June and they featured no major differences in positions on, for example, the Ukrainian crisis or relations with Russia.’
