Rams slow play left guard Steve Avila’s return from ankle injury

INGLEWOOD — As the Rams offense took the field to open their 27-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, there was one surprise with the starting 11.

Second-year player Justin Dedich was starting at left guard, as he had each of the two previous weeks. Starter Steve Avila, who missed the last two games with a sprained ankle, was on the sidelines despite being in uniform and active for the game.

After the win, head coach Sean McVay said the decision was about being careful with Avila – who did not have a game designation on Friday’s injury report, indicating a clean bill of health — as he continues to recover from his ankle sprain.

“Steve’s still working himself back. I think Justin’s played really good football. You guys know how much I love Steve,” McVay said. “Once he gets back to full health, I look forward to seeing what he’s able to do for us, but felt like it was better to have him up in that situation today. He’s working his tail off behind the scenes, and Steve’s going to be a big part of what we’re doing.”

Nacua cleared

After briefly leaving Sunday’s game with a thumb injury, Rams receiver Puka Nacua was able to return and finish the game with 13 catches for 170 yards and his first receiving touchdown of the year.

On the first drive of the second half, Nacua said he got rolled up on during a run play, which led to him going back to the locker room to get his hand checked out.

“There are some big human beings over there, and sometimes they win the battle every once in a while,” joked Nacua, who prides himself on his run blocking.

Nacua said he got an X-ray done on his thumb, and everything came back negative. McVay said that Nacua is expected to play in Thursday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Up the list

With his three touchdown passes on Sunday, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford moved up past Kurt Warner to sixth all-time on the franchise’s passing touchdown list (103).
