Known for his ‘deep, booming call’, he ‘far exceeded’ the usual lifespan of wild lions, with most males often only reaching 16 years of age.
Asiatic lions are endangered and one of the world’s rarest big cat species, numbering less than 900 still living in the wild.
They used to span Africa, Greece, Turkey and Asia, but now roam in a single forest in India.
This has left the species particularly vulnerable to disease, habitat loss and natural disasters.
Head of Mammals at Chester Zoo Mark Brayshaw said: ‘His long and full life is a true reflection not only of the incredible care and love shown to him by our dedicated Carnivore Team, but also of the enriched environment they created for him.
‘Iblis was not only well cared for, he was held in great affection.

‘He spent his years thriving, enjoying his surroundings and leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
‘His absence will be especially felt by those who shared in his wonderful journey.’
Mr Brayshaw said the zoo will welcome two ‘carefully matched’ lions in the next few months as they continue to safeguard Asiatic lions.
A spokesperson for Chester Zoo added: ‘Our thoughts are with the carnivore team and with those who loved Iblis, as we celebrate his magnificent life and the legacy he leaves behind him.’
