Drake Maye was the hero — and then he wasn’t.
A day after he was cleared from concussion protocol, the Patriots’ rookie quarterback threw a five-yard touchdown pass as time expired Sunday. The Patriots kicked the extra point to force overtime.
After the Titans kicked a field goal, Maye had a chance to win the game. On the Patriots’ third play, he tried a deep pass down the field to receiver Kayshon Boutte — and it was intercepted to end the game.
He wasn’t he only rookie quarterback to play an outsize role in their team’s game Sunday, for better or worse. Here’s how the quarterbacks picked in the first round fared in Week 9:
No. 1 overall pick: Bears QB Caleb Williams
Williams has the worst passer rating and completion percentage among qualifying quarterbacks over the past two weeks. The Bears offense never found a rhythm in Arizona, failing to score a touchdown for the second time this season.
No. 2 overall pick: Commanders QB Jayden Daniels
Daniels improved to 7-2 by posting a 128.8 passer rating, completing 15-of-22 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns in a five-point win against the Giants. He added eight carries for 35 yards.
No. 3 overall pick: Patriots QB Drake Maye
Maye finished 29-for-41 for 206 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a 69.8 passer rating. His next game is Sunday against the Bears at Soldier Field.
No. 12 overall pick: Broncos QB Bo Nix
In a 41-10 loss to the Broncos, Nix went 19-for-33 for 223 yards, an interception and a 65.6 passer rating. Nix ran six times for 36 yards, though, and caught a two-yard touchdown pass on a trick play. Nix has the worst passer rating among the four rookie rookie starters.
