You can spot the Red Arrows flying past in one region of the UK today as part of the Great Run half-marathon.

The daredevil RAF pilots are set to take to the skies again today in the North East.

Today’s Red Arrows display comes at the same time as around 60,000 runners race from Newcastle to South Shields as part of the AJ Bell Great North Run half-marathon.

Where are the Red Arrows based?

The North East fly past is just one of the rounds made by the aerobatic display team, who tour major air festivals in the UK and abroad.

In August, the jets travelled to Romania to the Bucharest International Air Show and the Radom Airshow in Poland last weekend.

Reaching their destination from their base at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, is quick as the Hawk T1 jets can reach a maximum speed of 660mph.

In a dive, they can exceed the speed of sound.

How do you join Red Arrows?

There are strict standards for who can climb into the cockpit of a Red Arrow jet.

First, you must already serve in the RAF as a fast jet pilot – and have at least 1,500 flying hours under your belt along with operational tour experience in the field.

The pilot hopefuls must also be graded above averaga as a pilot by their superiors.

Finally, the pilot candidates are put through a gruelling flying test and rounds of interviews.
