REDWOOD CITY — An incarcerated woman died Monday morning at a San Mateo County Jail following a medical emergency, authorities said.
Personnel were notified that the person, who was identified only as a 31-year-old woman, was experiencing a medical emergency around 6 a.m. in a housing unit at the Maple Street Correctional Center, according to a press release from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Office personnel gave lifesaving measures while waiting for the arrival of medical staff who work inside the facility as well as fire and EMS personnel, authorities said.
The woman was later pronounced deceased at the facility, authorities added.
“The well-being and safety of those in our custody is our highest priority,” authorities said. “The Sheriff’s Office extends its sincerest condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.”
The housing unit the person was in had received a routine safety check shortly before the medical emergency was reported, authorities said.
Authorities from the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Bureau, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office were alerted to the death and responded to the facility, the Sheriff’s Office added. Each agency will conduct a separate investigation into the circumstances of the death.
The results of the investigations will be made available on the Sheriff’s Office website after their conclusions, authorities said.
The Board of State and Community Corrections will also be notified of the death, authorities said.
The identity of the deceased woman will be released by the Coroner’s Office pending identifications and notification of next of kin, authorities added. The office will also determine the cause of death.
In a separate incident Friday, four deputies and half a dozen inmates were injured at the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City after a fight involving about 30 inmates broke out.
