Report of shots fired at federal agents during immigration enforcement in Little Village under investigation

At least two people were arrested by Chicago police and shots were allegedly fired at Border Patrol agents conducting immigration enforcement operations as tensions flared in Little Village Saturday morning.

The Chicago Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at federal agents in the 2500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, police said in a statement.

“CPD officers responded to the shots fired scene to secure the area. There are no reports of anyone struck by gunfire,” the statement said. Police deferred additional inquiries be directed to federal authorities who are handling the investigation.

Border Patrol and FBI didn’t immediately respond when asked which agency is investigating the alleged shooting incident. Border Patrol also didn’t respond when asked whether the incident was captured by dashboard or body cameras.

The Department of Homeland Security claimed in a statement that agents were conducting operations near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue when a man in a black Jeep fired shots at them and fled the scene.

The shooter remained at large, according to DHS.

No injuries, damage from gunfire, ballistic evidence was reported and no weapon was recovered.

According to police scanner traffic, there was confusion and scrambling among Chicago police to respond to the reported shooting, the crowds who had gathered at the scene and the immigration enforcement activity in the area. Warnings that tear gas was going to be deployed were also given but an agent was seen backing off.

Around 9:30 a.m., a caller reported shots fired in the 2500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, according to police scanners.

There had been a call of a “suspicious auto,” described as a Cadillac truck, that refused to move from the road in the area before the report of shots fired.

A Border Patrol agent alleged shots were fired, but didn’t “know if agents are being shot at.”

Around the same time, more cars were dispatched to 26th Street and Kedzie and 25th and Whipple streets. Chicago police officers were seen rerouting traffic off 23rd Street and Sawyer Avenue for an investigation.

Around 9:45 a.m., there was a report of a Chicago police officer down after being hit by a car at 26th Street and Kedzie. The officer was conducting traffic control when he was accidentally hit by a GMC pickup truck driven by a 20-year-old woman, police said. The officer sustained minor injuries and taken to an area hospital, where he is listed in good condition.

After the crash, federal agents warned Chicago police they planned to release tear gas but backed off.

By 10:22 a.m., an officer told a dispatcher that a “crime scene” still hadn’t been located for the shooting. “We’re still looking,” the officer said over police radio.
