Residents evacuated and bomb squad called after ‘unidentified liquid’ found in Eastbourne house

Sussex Police said they are moving the families out in a planned operation after warning people to stay in their homes. The unidentified liquid was found in a bottle at a house in Eastbourne on Monday evening. Police called in the army bomb squad and the decision was taken to evacuate people living on six roads in the seaside town. A spokesman for the force said they are encouraging residents to be out of their homes by 9am today (Tuesday). Detective Superintendent Jon Robeson: "The item is secure and the road closed, and a number of police will be present to provide reassurance as we work with emergency services and other partner agencies to minimise disruption." Police were called to an address on Hyde Road at 1727 on Monday. The army bomb squad were called in to assess the bottle containing the unidentified liquid soon after. Police advised locals to stay indoors and a cordon is still in place. Sussex Police said: "In consultation with Explosive Ordnance Disposal and partners, a planned evacuation of nearby homes is being organised for Tuesday morning." "We are satisfied that there is no immediate risk to residents and an evacuation of nearby homes can be completed safely and effectively during daylight hours to minimise impact on the local residents. ???We appreciate the support of residents and the wider community who will be affected by the necessary precautionary actions we need to take, and hopefully they will be able to swiftly return to their homes. A bomb squad has evacuated 160 families after an ‘unidentified liquid’ was found in a house.

Police found the substance in a bottle at a house in Eastbourne, on the south coast, on Monday evening.

The discovery prompted officers to call in the army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, who decided to evacuate six roads around Hyde Road in the seaside town.

The road has been closed and the item is secure, authorities added.

Police are warning residents to be out of their homes on Hyde Road, Camden Road, Calverley Road, West Terrace, Bath Road and Grove Road by 9am Tuesday morning.
