Richmond police warn public about string of sexual batteries

RICHMOND — Walkers and joggers in the Point Richmond area have received a warning from police to be aware of their surroundings, because a string of sexual batteries has occurred in that area recently.

In a statement, police said they are investigating a series of recent attacks that have happened during the daylight and early evening hours. The aggressor primarily has targeted people who were jogging or walking alone, police said.

Most of the incidents have been near the popular walking and jogging paths, including the Point Richmond Tunnel and Keller Beach.

“We understand that these incidents are deeply concerning and want to assure the public that we are dedicating all available resources to identify and apprehend the suspect,” police said in their statement.

Police said the man approaches his victims and makes unwanted contact with them, then flees.

According to police, it’s not smart to be alone in Point Richmond right now, and that walkers, joggers and bikers should be in pairs or groups. Those who are alone in the area should not listen to music on headphones; rather, they should look around at all times.

Police also recommended that people in this area choose populated, well-lit paths and avoid isolated areas that are overgrown with vegetation. Anyone out should carry a whistle or personal alarm, too, police said.

“Trust your instincts,” police said. “If something feels off, leave the area and report any suspicious activity immediately.”

Police emphasized that anyone in an emergency should call 9-1-1. They also encouraged anyone who witnesses something that doesn’t seem right to call them at 510-233-1214.
