A San Jose man was one of two people killed in a head-on crash on a rural road in Merced County.
The crash happened around 11:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, on Highway 59 (Los Banos Highway) about 1½ miles north of Highway 152.
A notification from an iPhone in one of the cars alerted emergency dispatchers of a possible crash, and California Highway Patrol officers found both drivers dead at the site. They were the only occupants of the vehicles.
Those killed were identified as Tyler Alexander Jackson, 29, of San Jose, and Susana Esquivel, 28, of Atwater.
The CHP said that Jackson, in a 2016 Toyota Camry, was northbound on Highway 59, when Esquivel, southbound in a 2019 Toyota Camry, reportedly crossed the center line and hit his car.
The section of road where the accident occurred, south of the community of El Nido, is two lanes through agricultural fields. The speed limit is 55 mph.
