San Jose: Man who walked onto Hwy 87 dies after being struck by vehicle

SAN JOSE — A pedestrian died Friday after he walked onto Highway 87 and was hit by a vehicle, authorities said.

He was pronounced deceased on the highway at about 7:50 p.m. Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol’s San Jose area office. The collision remains under investigation.

Around 7:40 p.m., the driver of a Ford Fusion was traveling southbound on Highway 87 in the first lane at a speed of about 65 miles per hour, authorities said. The Ford driver was approaching Taylor Street, when the pedestrian entered the highway, walked into the path of the Ford and was struck, authorities said. It is not known why the pedestrian walked onto the highway.

The driver of the Ford remained at the scene and was not injured, authorities said. Authorities do not suspect that the driver was driving under the influence.

The identity of the pedestrian will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office.

Southbound Highway 87 was closed for two hours and traffic was redirected onto Taylor Street as authorities investigated.
