Meal Pack project
More than 600 volunteers are set to mark Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance with a project at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.
Now in its second year, the San Jose Meal Pack for 9/11 Day is one of 24 large-scale volunteer service projects being organized throughout the nation by the nonprofit 9/11 Day. Across the U.S., more than 30,000 individuals are expected to volunteer at 9/11 Day’s Meal Pack events, assembling more than nine million nonperishable meals for food-insecure Americans.
Volunteers at the San Jose event are expected to pack more than 160,000 healthy, nonperishable meals for donation to Second Harvest of Silicon Valley for distribution to individuals and families in need in the South Bay. Volunteer spots are limited; there is no open call.
The 9/11 Day Meal Pack Program is sponsored by the federal agency AmeriCorps, which oversees national service programs throughout the United States. According to Feeding America, more than 47 million Americans face food insecurity in the United States. Visit 911day.org for more information.
