San Jose students nominated for Rita Moreno Awards

Bay Area Older Adults is hosting a day trip to “the Ellis Island of the West”  on Thursday, May 15, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Participants will catch the bus in Cupertino before taking a ferry boat ride to Angel island for an easy 4-mile walk to enjoy views of the Bay Area. Participants will learn about the Huimen tribe, Spanish explorers, World War I and II military history, as well as Chinese and other immigrants who passed through during the 1883 Chinese Exclusion Act.

ROSE GARDEN>>Performers in shows at Bellarmine College Preparatory and Lincoln High School are among the 2025 nominees for the Rita Moreno Awards. Sponsored by Broadway San Jose and Children’s Musical Theater San Jose, this regional awards competition recognizes outstanding achievement in high school musical theater from San Mateo County down to Kern County in Southern California.

Aiden Mangalick is a lead actor nominee for his role as Pontius Pilate in Bellarmine’s production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Melanie Vincent is nominated for her supporting role as Annas/Apostle James in the same show.

Princess Ravelo was nominated for her supporting performance as Fate 2 in “Hadestown: Teen Edition” at Lincoln High School.

These students will compete with the other nominees in front of a panel of judges on Monday, May 12,  at 7:30 p.m. Winners in the Lead Actor and Lead Actress categories will head to New York City to compete for scholarships against students from across the nation at the 16th annual Jimmy Award Ceremony at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre on Monday, June 23.
