Saratoga High students donate their time, talent during summer vacation

Students volunteer for charities

Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District students volunteered with two nonprofits this summer to help children in need.

“Our students continue to inspire us with their compassion and commitment to others,” District Superintendent Heath Rocha said in a release. “These service projects reflect the heart of our district: students who lead with kindness, empathy and a desire to make their community stronger.”

Students in the summer program and the district’s Community-Based Instruction Special Education program gathered with other student volunteers during lunch breaks to crochet wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment as part of the Magic Yarn Project.

The nonprofit donates princess- and superhero-themed yarn wigs to patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. The effort was led by retired Los Gatos Union School District counselor and school psychologist Linda Williams. The finished wigs will be donated to Stanford Children’s Hospital.

Some students also baked 20 lasagnas for young adults aging out of the foster care system. It was done through Lasagna Love, a global grassroots nonprofit that brings together volunteer chefs and families in need with homemade meals.
