The deadly attack unfolded on Thursday afternoon at the Nantes private school Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides.
The boy is said to have arrived at the school before running into two classrooms as he carried out the heinous assault.
Four people were stabbed in total with one female student dying from her injuries.
Two remain in critical condition with the fourth only suffering minor stab wounds, according to BFM TV.
A source close to the investigation told The Sun: “The male attacker went up to a second floor classroom at around midday, and stabbed another student to death.
“He then went downstairs to another classroom, and attacked another three teenagers with a knife, leaving them severely wounded.”
Cops confirmed the teen was quickly overpowered by teachers just as police arrived to arrest him.
Dozens of officers, ambulances and emergency crews rushed to the school to help those injured.
Neither the attacker or any of his victims have been identified.
The school was evacuated as armed police flooded the area and secured off the area outside of the school as they continue on with their investigations.
Officials don’t believe the attack was terror related with the teen not being on any police or intelligence radars.
It is still unclear if the student attended the school.
A shocked student at the school told Ouest-France news outlet: “We left our classroom at around 1pm and saw a lot of students crying. We didn’t understand why.”
A second added: “When we found out we were shocked. We didn’t think this could happen in our high school.”
A psychological support unit has now been set up for pupils.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to arrive at the scene later this afternoon.
Former French prime minister turned education minister Elisabeth Borne also announced she was heading to the school.
She said via X: “A knife attack took place this afternoon at a private school in Nantes.
“I am going there with @BrunoRetailleau to express my solidarity with the victims and my support for the educational community.”
In February, France was rocked by an attack when a knifeman killed one and injured five in a horror terror related ambush on police officers.
It comes just months after eight people were killed and 17 others injured after a man went on a stabbing spree at a school in China.
Cops said that a 21-year-old man is believed to have carried out the attack in Yixing City in China‘s Jiangsu province.
He is said to be a former student at the Wuxi Vocational College of Arts and Technology where the attack occurred.
Police said the suspect – identified only by his family name, Xu – graduated from school earlier this year and was angry about not receiving his graduation certificate.
