Broncos coach Sean Payton said nothing should come as a surprise during the NFL draft and even so he can’t figure out why Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders hasn’t been selected over the first three rounds.
“I think we’re all surprised and yet, the talent, holy cow,” Payton said.
The third-year Denver coach said he’s known CU coach Deion Sanders for years and that he’s watched Shedeur Sanders play since he was in junior high.
More recently, Payton and much of the Broncos coaching staff was in Boulder for Colorado’s pro day and Payton stood right behind Sanders watching him throw to No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter and CU’s fleet of potential Day 3 wide receiver prospects.
The Broncos coach called Sanders’ workout “outstanding.”
He also had a prediction for the league as it pertains to Sanders, who at one time was in the conversation to be the No. 1 overall pick and more recently had been seen as, at worst, likely to be drafted late in the first round or early on Day 2.
“There will be this chip on his shoulder and beware, because this guy is going to play in this league,” Payton said. “I think it’s hard for any of us to explain what other people are looking for. We focus on what we’re looking for. I think it’s surprising.”
