Secondary school pupil arrested after bomb squad called to family home

A white British schoolboy will appear in court after the bomb squad were called out to inspect ‘suspicious items’ found at his house.

Police raided the home in Monkseaton, North Tyneside after receiving a report of suspicious activity at 1.15pm on Friday.

Suspicious items were discovered during their enquiries, which resulted in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team attending the scene that same day.

Forensic officers were seen carrying out further investigations at the property.

A police spokesman said ‘there is no risk to the wider public’.

The schoolboy, of secondary school age, is due to appear before Bedlington Magistrates Court on Monday.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed: ‘Shortly after 1.15pm on Friday, we received a report of suspicious activity in the North Tyneside area.

‘As part of their enquiries, police attended an address in the Monkseaton area and found a number of suspicious items.

‘The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team attended the scene and there is no risk to the wider public.

‘A secondary-school aged white British boy from the Whitley Bay area was arrested in connection with the report.

‘He has since been charged with possession of an explosive substance, and is due to appear before court on Monday.

‘With proceedings now active, we would ask people to refrain from speculating about the incident both online and in the community.’
