Several people are feared dead after a passenger train derailed in the middle of a German forest.

The train, carrying a hundred people, came off its track in southeastern Baden-Württemberg, a spokesperson for the Stuttgart Federal Police confirmed.

Several people have been killed and many others injured after the accident, security sources told press agency DPA.

Photos from the remote scene in a hard-to-access forest show rescuers trying to saw their way into a train carriage that has flipped on its side at around 6pm on Sunday.

The railway line between Riedlingen and Munderkingen is ‘currently closed due to an accident’, Ulm police posted on X.

A spokesperson for the responsible federal police told BILD: ‘Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express train have derailed.

‘At the time of the accident, 100 people were on board.

‘At least three of them are injured. No information can be given at this time regarding the severity of their injuries,’ the spokesperson continued.

The Reutlingen control centre declared a’mass casualty incident’ in which a large number of injured people are expected to require care.

Federal police forces are still en route to the scene of the accident, Bild reported.

The crash occurred in the Biberach district, nearly 12 miles from the French border.

Details about what caused the derailment were not immediately available.
