The weather warning, covering the east coast and some inland areas from north Norfolk down to Eastbourne in East Sussex, is in place from 8pm tonight until 5am tomorrow.
Some places in these areas could see 30-50mm of rain and winds in excess of 40-50mph, along with frequent lightning, the forecaster said.
A yellow thunderstorm warning, meanwhile, has been issued for all of Wales, and large parts of western England from 2pm today until 11.59pm tonight, and another for the south and the east from 7pm until 6am tomorrow.
Flooding in the amber areas is likely, while in the yellow areas is possible, the Met said.

Power cuts could also occur, it added.
The midlands, northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland are not included in today’s warnings.

However, from midnight until 6pm tomorrow the Wales and western England yellow thunderstorm warning will extend into large parts of northern England and Scotland.
Showers across the country should ease through Sunday, with dry weather and sunny expected for many on Monday and Tuesday, said the Met Office.
Temperatures early next week are expected to sit in the low 20s in the north, and rise to as high as 26C-27C in London.
Amber is the second highest Met Office warning out of three, with yellow being the lowest and red the most severe.
