SF Giants officially promote top pitching prospect Whisenhunt

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants have officially selected the contract of left-hander Carson Whisenhunt, the top pitching prospect in their organization, ahead of his first career start on Monday night at Oracle Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In a corresponding move, right-hander Sean Hjelle was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. Right-hander Carson Ragsdale, who was part of San Francisco’s trio of Carsons, was designated for assignment.

Whisenhunt, 24, posted a 4.42 ERA over 18 starts with Sacramento and was twice named PCL (Pacific Coast League) Pitcher of the Week prior to his promotion. Earlier this month, Whisenhunt represented the Giants alongside undrafted reliever Trent Harris at the All-Star Futures Game, retiring both batters the he faced.

Manager Bob Melvin said following Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the New York Mets that the length of Whisenhunt’s outing will depend on his efficiency.
