Shermann ‘Dilla’ Thomas joins staff of DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center

Urban TikTok historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas will be sharing his knowledge of Chicago, world history and more, as he joins the team at the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, it was announced Wednesday.

Thomas has been hired as brand ambassador and chief of social media, according to the museum. In those roles, he will “use his expertise to elevate the museum’s presence and share its mission of preserving and celebrating the experiences of African Americans and of Black people worldwide.”

“We are thrilled that Dilla is joining our DuSable team,” Perri Irmer, DuSable’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “His knowledge of Chicago’s rich history and his dynamic approach to social media and storytelling will be a wonderful avenue to reach and engage with our community and with new audiences. We are excited for the future and look forward to the impact he will make in this new role.”

The Auburn Gresham native produces bite-sized history lessons for audiences on TikTok, where he has garnered over 1 million likes and about 102,000 followers. He’s also expanded his classroom from social media, including a YouTube series, to chartered bus tours around South and West Side neighborhoods to share the history and beauty in communities he loves.

His slogan is: “Everything dope about America comes from Chicago.”

“As a lifetime Chicagoan and champion of all things South Side, it is a dream fulfilled for me to join the team at the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center,” Dilla said. “I am a storyteller at heart, and there are endless chapters to be curated and shared at the Du. I can’t wait to get started.”
