A man has been banned from an entire county after stealing £220 worth of Creme Eggs from a petrol station.
This is no yolk.
Deon De Groot went into a Tesco Express at a petrol station in Dogsthorpe, near Peterborough, on Saturday morning, where he was seen shoving the Cadbury Easter treats into his bag.
After De Groot, 26, left the shop without paying, a member of staff flagged down a passing police car. Officers followed and managed to catch up with the thief.
Not only had he dropped his duffel bag nearby, containing several boxes of Creme Eggs, but he had also shoved several of the chocolate eggs into his jacket.
The scale of the theft even seemed to surprise the Cambridgeshire Police officers, who recorded the arrest on their body worn video camera.
One of them commented ‘Christ, you’ve really loaded this up’ as he pulled 13 boxes of Creme Eggs out of De Groot’s jacket.
It’s thought the chocolate eggs were worth £220.50 in total.
De Groot, of no fixed address, admitted one charge of theft from a shop.
He appeared at Peterborough magistrates court where he was handed a 12-week suspended prison sentence.
He was also banned from entering Cambridgeshire for three months.
PC Guy Cunningham, who made the arrest, said: ‘Thanks to the quick reaction by staff who flagged us down, we were able to catch De Groot red-handed and return the stolen items to the store.’
