Sky waive Moriah Jefferson, likely setting up a signing

The shorthanded Sky (7-18) waived veteran guard Moriah Jefferson on Sunday, creating a roster spot as they look to add help for the final stretch of the season.

Jefferson, an eight-year veteran, appeared in only five games. A lingering calf injury limited her availability, and when she did play, she rarely logged more than a few minutes. She was originally expected to serve as the team’s backup point guard.

With Jefferson sidelined most of the year, the Sky have leaned on Rachel Banham to handle the ball. Though Banham is the team’s most consistent 3-point shooter, she’s playing out of position on a team that leads the WNBA in turnovers. Rookie Hailey Van Lith has also been tested at point, but likely needs more time before she can confidently run a pro offense.

The move gives the Sky flexibility to either sign a free agent or trade for one or more players — but most urgently, they need healthy bodies. Only eight players were available for Sunday’s loss to the Fever. Angel Reese and Ariel Atkins, the team’s top scorers, have missed multiple games with injuries and remain day-to-day.

Because Jefferson was a protected veteran, waiving her does not create cap space. The Sky currently have $53,016 in room, per HerHoopStats.
