A national television audience will get a good look at one reason the Bears are working urgently to build and move into a new stadium.
Despite the field being re-sodded last month after multiple concerts, crews worked Monday to tamp down and fill in patchy areas so the field will at least look like it’s in good condition at the start of the game between the Bears and Vikings to open the season.
That treatment typically hasn’t held up, though, when the Bears have tried it in the past. Usually, by the second quarter or so, the field looks worn again.
The issue popped up the same day team president Kevin Warren issued a letter to fans reiterating the team’s intent to move to Arlington Heights and play in an indoor stadium. The team began the process of purchasing the land in 2021, but no work has been done other than demolishing the racetrack that was on the property.
Warren has said repeatedly the plan is to break ground by the end of 2025 and have the new stadium ready to open for the 2028 season. He added Monday that the team hopes to host a Super Bowl in 2031.
Asked about the final kickoff, Bears coach Ben Johnson said ‘the intent was for the ball to go out of the end zone.’

ESPN charted Williams as throwing off-target on 47% of his passes in the second half. Coach Ben Johnson liked his start, but said the completions “certainly felt like they dried up a little bit.”
