Southern California-based maker’s market finds its way to Los Gatos

Muse Markets coming downtown

For those who love local businesses and community events, Muse Markets is coming to downtown Los Gatos on Oct. 11

Muse Markets was founded by a group of artists, entrepreneurs and organizers who want to elevate conscious consumption, according to their mission statement. Conscious consumption refers to making ethical and sustainable purchase decisions that have positive social, economic and environmental impacts. Similar events have been established in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

The Muse Market in Los Gatos will feature over 40 independent brands, artists, designers and curators. Clothing, painters, candles, pastries and other artisan goods will be on sale at the event.

The event is expected to take place in Town Plaza Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Barnes and Noble opening

A new Barnes and Noble will be opening in downtown Los Gatos on Oct. 8, the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce confirmed in an email to this news organization.

The opening date was initially scheduled for Sept. 24, but the date was pushed back, the email said.

The national bookstore chain is set to open at 122 N. Santa Cruz Ave. The building was previously the site of a locally owned antiques business.

The brand is also facing a federal lawsuit in a disability discrimination case. According to a press release by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an employee asked for unpaid leave after her doctor diagnosed her with postpartum depression. Her request was allegedly denied and she was fired in the following months. The case is filed in the U.S. District Court for Northern District of California.

Golden Spoon honorees

The Pastaria & Market and Tasting House Los Gatos were honored with Golden Spoon distinctions at this year’s Taste of Los Gatos on Sept. 6.

The Golden Spoon Distinction recognizes businesses and culinary leaders who help shape the community. The guidelines include community outreach initiatives led by chefs and owners, enhancing the town’s culinary reputation, continued presence in the dining scene, and creative presentation, menus and marketing initiatives. The Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce and co-leaders of the Chamber’s Los Gatos Food & Wine Group select the winners.

The Pastaria & Market started as a handmade pasta and sauce shop before growing into a full-fledged restaurant. The Chamber praised the chefs’ creativity in weaving authentic Italian dishes with seasonal California flavors. The restaurant’s community engagement efforts were also highlighted, from supporting local schools, youth programs and nonprofits to participating in Chamber initiatives and the Los Gatos Food & Wine Group.

Tasting House Los Gatos was established as a “refined dining destination and a true community hub,” a press release stated. The restaurant and its chefs were praised for offering a dining experience that highlights “refined technique, creativity and a commitment to hyper-local sourcing,” according to the Chamber of Commerce. Tasting House was also praised for its innovative new menu offerings, like a 15-course Champagne-paired tasting menu and afternoon tea service.
