People looking for a sunny getaway to Spain will be left disappointed thanks to hail and potential snow forecast for parts of the country.
On the flipside here in the UK, it is expected to be sunny with highs of 24°C in southern parts this weekend.
Orange alerts for storms, hail and possibly snow on higher ground have been issued by AEMET, Spain’s weather agency.
It posted on X: ‘Orange alerts for storms (significant danger) continue into the early hours of Friday along the Catalan coast and Mallorca. They will form again in the afternoon.
‘Be aware of Saturday: storms could be very intense and accompanied by hail, especially in areas of the northern peninsula.’
Where are the weather warnings in Spain?
Today this is impacting popular holiday hotspots including Mallorca in the Balearic Islands and Barcelona.
Storms could also become intense and accompanied by hail across other parts of Spain including Catalonia, Castile, Valencia and eastern parts of Andalusia.
The heavy rain, storms and cloud are expected to last until next week as well in places such as Mallorca and Menorca.
Despite it being warmer in the Canary Islands, like in Tenerife which will reach 22°C, heavy rainfall is expected tonight and into the weekend.
This poor weather is unusual for Spain during this time of year and is being caused by a low pressure system from the Atlantic.
On top of this, a cold air mass is pushing its way across the Iberian Peninsula.
A power outage hit Spain’s Canary Islands yesterday just a week after a nationwide outage.
At least 30,000 people were impacted across 20 towns for almost two hours.
Places affected included Santa Cruz de La Palma, Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso, Tazacorte, Breña Alta, and Puntallana.
How does the UK weather forecast compare?
While there is a risk of possible thunderstorms and showers in the south and west at times this weekend, high pressure will dominate.
Today remains sunny across large parts of the country, with the highest temperatures in Wales and the Midlands at around 22°C.
There will be lots of sunshine and hotter temperatures to enjoy on Saturday, with highs of 24°C across eastern Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and the south of England.
The change in the weather comes on Saturday night, where there is the risk of showers and possible thunderstorms overnight and into Sunday morning, bringing the risk of 25 to 35mm of rain in some parts.
But in the sunshine, temperatures could reach a whopping 26°C and 27°C.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Harris, said: ‘From Saturday night, into Sunday morning, there is an increasing chance of rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms moving northwards across the southwest of the UK.
‘As we continue through Sunday and into Monday, this will extend to other western parts of Great Britain and into Northern Ireland too.
‘On Monday itself, we could see some particularly vigorous thunderstorms developing, most likely in Wales and parts of southern England, whilst elsewhere during this whole period, dry, fine, and increasingly warm conditions are expected.’
