OAKLAND — The police search continued Friday for a pit bull stolen from the Oakland Animal Services shelter on July 24, the day before it was scheduled to be euthanized for biting a child.
The person who took the dog is also still being sought, police said.
The dog, a female named Lulu, had been at the city shelter at 1109 29th Avenue in East Oakland since the end of May after she was taken into custody by animal control officers for biting a 12-year-old girl. The girl was riding her bike in the 2800 block of Magnolia Street in West Oakland at the time.
The dog had been tied up to an RV and lunged at the girl as she rode by, severely biting her in the arm and causing her to be briefly hospitalized, authorities said.
Lulu was scheduled to be euthanized on July 25. But between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on July 24 someone broke into a rear window at the shelter and took her, authorities said.
As of Friday afternoon, neither Lulu or the person who took her had been located. Although not publicly identified, police said the woman who owns Lulu remains a person of interest in the theft.
Anyone with information about the theft and any suspects may call police at 510-238-3951.
