Investigators arrested a suspect on allegations he cashed a stolen $15,265.80 check issued by the Marin County Office of Education.
The county treasurer’s office reported the theft in June. The check was deposited in a Chase Bank account in San Francisco, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
The bank determined the check was fraudulent in time to block withdrawals on it, and the county got the funds back, the sheriff’s office said. The investigation determined that the check was stolen in the mail.
Detectives executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence in Daly City on Thursday. Rhod Robles, 20, was booked into the Marin County Jail on theft and fraud allegations, the sheriff’s office said.
Robles has been released pending further review by the Marin County District Attorney’s Office. He could not be reached for comment Monday.
The sheriff’s office did not specify the purpose of the county payment.
