The four-vehicle collision happened around 5:05 p.m. at Lawrence Expressway and Lochinvar Avenue, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said in a news release.
Emergency personnel arrived to find one of the vehicles on its roof, engulfed in flames and the driver trapped inside. “Untenable fire conditions” prevented personnel from rescuing the driver, according to authorities. The driver was later pronounced dead.
The occupants of the other three vehicles suffered minor injuries. They remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
Authorities said speed appeared to play a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Lawrence Expressway between Benton Street and Homestead Road was closed for several hours following the collision.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Investigator M. Longanecker at 408-730-7110.
