Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell hosted her 4th annual Juneteenth Celebration and Resource Fair Friday evening at Victoria Community Regional Park in Carson.

It honored the official holiday, June 19, 1865, the day that the last enslaved African American people, in Galveston, TX, learned that slavery had been abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier. More than 250,000 enslaved African American people throughout Texas were freed.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.

At the free event, emceed by actor and director William Allen Young, attendees of all ages learned about county and community resources including tenant protections, immigration rights, mental health support, record expungement, took part in empowering discussions, saw performances and engaged in activities.

The previous years’ celebrations and resource fairs were at Magic Johnson Park in Willowbrook.
