Surfer hospitalized following Sonoma Coast shark attack

A surfer was hospitalized with minor injuries Friday morning after he was bitten on the hand by a shark at North Salmon Creek Beach in Bodega Bay.

According to Karen Hancock, a Sonoma County Fire District spokesperson, responding emergency personnel arrived on scene to find that the surfer had made it to shore on his own and had managed to bandage his own hand. The surfer initially declined medical treatment, Hancock added.

He later took himself to the hospital, officials said.

The shark also bit the surfer’s board. Its teeth marks could be seen in the board, officials said.

The type of shark involved in the attack was not known.

The shark attack was reported shortly after 9 a.m., authorities said. They added that the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, which had been out on patrol nearby got to the surfer quickly.

Hancock said shark attacks off the Sonoma Coast are rare. Still, she urged surfers to be observant and surf with a buddy.
