CONCORD — Prosecutors have charged a man with more than one count of attempted murder after police said he tried to run from a traffic stop and pointed a gun at two officers last week, according to court records.
Court documents show that Eric Foreman, 37, of Richmond, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, as well as two counts of assault on a peace officer; being a felon in possession of a gun; and carrying a loaded gun. The drama happened on April 3.
Foreman remained in custody Wednesday at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $4.418 million bail.
The shooting was the second time in less than two months that Concord police officers fired their guns. On Feb. 18, officers shot 20 rounds over three separate volleys and killed a man who they said was stabbing his father. Police have released video and identified the five officers involved in that shooting.
Authorities have not identified the two officers who fired at Foreman or released any officer-worn video.
According to authorities, the April shooting happened after an officer tried to pull over the Chrysler sedan Foreman drove on Ellis Street near Clayton Road. Police said Foreman tried to run away.
A statement by Concord police released Tuesday said that Foreman exited the Chrysler before he stopped it, causing it to run into another vehicle. Court records show that prosecutors also charged Foreman with misdemeanor hit-and-run.
Police said that after Foreman ran, he went through an apartment complex and across Clayton Road into the parking lot of a Pet Smart in the 1700 block of Willow Pass Road. Once there, police said, he stopped and pulled a handgun out of his pants and turned to the officer while holding it in his hand.
An officer reacted by firing, though the shot did not hit Foreman or anyone else. Police said Foreman then began to run again in a southeast direction through the parking lot and then east on the Clayton Road sidewalk.
At that point, a second officer tried to stop Foreman. That officer also fired after Foreman again pointed the gun outside a photo shop in the 1700 block of Clayton Road, authorities said; no one was struck in that exchange.
Police in their statement said a subsequent investigation showed that Foreman tried to fire his gun at the officers.
Foreman eventually hid in the area of Clayton Road and Sutter Street, police said, and they found him with the help of a helicopter, a police dog and drone team from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Pittsburg and Pleasant Hill police officers also helped. Police said the dog found Foreman.
Court records show that prosecutors also charged Foreman with obstructing officers, a misdemeanor.
