Suspect arrested in arson of Charlie Kirk memorial at Loveland home

A Loveland man was arrested Monday for his suspected involvement in the arson of a Charlie Kirk memorial on a fence outside of a Loveland home, according to a Loveland Police Department post on X Tuesday morning.

The 64-year-old Loveland man, David Gilroy, was arrested at 10:17 p.m. and is facing charges for second-degree arson $300 to $1000 and for resisting arrest, according to Larimer County Jail records.

A 6-foot-by-3-foot sign that read “RIP Charlie Kirk / We stand with you” on a fence outside of a home was set on fire Saturday night and the arson appears to be politically motivated based on the Loveland Police Department’s preliminary investigation, according to a department post on X Monday.

An update to the post Tuesday morning stated that new developments in the case led to the arrest of a Loveland man Monday night. The post didn’t include the suspect’s name, but the Loveland Reporter-Herald confirmed the suspect’s identity with the Loveland Police Department Tuesday morning.

“Our detective worked relentlessly through the weekend, pursuing credible leads and gathering additional information,” the post stated. “The investigation remains active, and we will provide further details once possible.”

The resident whose sign and fence was burned said he felt compelled to put up the memorial because the need for “freedom of speech is prevalent more than ever.”

Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday at an “American Comeback Tour” event at Utah Valley University. Kirk’s tour was scheduled to stop at Colorado State University this Thursday.

Gilroy’s first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 25, according to court records.
