A man who fled to Indiana after allegedly beating a 76-year-old man to death and carjacking an SUV at a McDonald’s is in custody Tuesday, police said.
No charges have been announced for the 32-year-old suspect.
The attack unfolded about 9:15 p.m. at a bus stop in the 9500 block of South Halsted Street when the 32-year-old allegedly pushed a 76-year-old man to the ground, according to a police report.
A witness who had video of the incident told police the two were in an argument when it turned physical and the 32-year-old kicked the older man in the head and chest while he was on the ground, according to the report.
Responding officers found the 76-year-old lying the ground with trauma to his head, Chicago police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
The attacker then walked down the street to a McDonald’s, 9560 S. Halsted St., where a woman had gone inside to order food, the report said. She left her two grandchildren, 14 and 3, inside an SUV, that was running, police said.
After telling the kids he would shoot them if they didn’t get out of the SUV, he sped away in 2024 Kia Telluride, according to the report.
The children and the SUV owner were not injured and the suspect was arrested in Indiana after possibly crashing the SUV.
