A California news crew watched in shock as a police chase they were covering on live TV turned deadly in front of their eyes.
CBS Los Angeles anchors Suzie Suh and Juan Fernandez were talking viewers through the pursuit involving a stolen white van on the 110 Freeway, which seemed to be winding down when the vehicle’s operator came to a stop.
The van’s driver then crawled out of his vehicle’s window, crossed over a median and was instantly struck by a car speeding in the opposite direction, which was broadcast by the news helicopter following the chase.
“Oh my god! Oh no! Oh no!” Fernandez blurted out, visibly shaken.
The voice of assignment editor Mike Rogers could then be heard off camera coordinating coverage, according to Mediaite.
“Stay wide, stay wide,” Rogers said. “He got hit.”
Suh told viewers they’d just witnessed the suspected thief get hit by a car, but it wasn’t yet clear if he’d been killed.
“I can tell you that the person is down,” Rogers said. “They are not moving. It does not appear this is going to end well at all.”
CBS News later confirmed the suspect died after being struck while trying to flee on foot.
The Los Angeles Times said the victim, who has not been identified, was run over by “multiple vehicles” while trying to escape arrest around 9 p.m. The chase began in L.A.’s downtown area, went through Chinatown and ended near Mount Washington about 30 minutes later.
A dog was reportedly removed from the stolen van.
