Suspect in Oakley shooting arrested following car chase

OAKLEY – One man is in custody and another is receiving life-saving care in the wake of what police are calling a targeted shooting early Wednesday morning in Oakley.

The shooting happened around 3:15 a.m. in the 4800 block of Trenton Street, near the intersection of Oakley Road and Empire Avenue, according to the Oakley Police Department. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Medical personnel took the man to an area trauma center, where he is “undergoing life-saving treatment,” police said.

Around 3:20 a.m., a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted the suspect vehicle, a dark blue 2021 Ford F-150, in Knightsen. Police said the driver initially stopped for deputies near Byron Highway and Orwood Road but then sped off.

Deputies pursued the driver along Balfour Road through Brentwood. When he turned onto Deer Valley Road, Antioch police officers used spike strips to stop the pickup.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Hayward resident Tanginoa Tangi, was arrested and expected to be booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges including attempted murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle and felony evading.

Police said the shooting was a “targeted attack.”

“The victim in this case had just returned home and he was getting out of his vehicle when Tangi shot him several times,” Oakley police Chief Paul Beard said in a statement.

Police are seeking video footage of Tangi and his Ford on Trenton Street prior to the shooting and the period between the shooting and when he was spotted by the deputy in Knightsen. Files can be emailed to Detective Dombrouski at OPD@ci.oakley.ca.us.
