Chicago police officers fatally shot a man who fired shots at them Thursday after a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash in Northwest Indiana.
Officers responded to a call of a person with a gun about 5:50 p.m. in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue, where they spotted the man, also wanted for aggravated battery, get into a car and flee the area, Chicago police said.
He led officers on a chase until he crashed his car just across the state border in the 100 block of Gostlin Avenue in Gary, Indiana, police said.
The gunman fired shots at Chicago police officers, prompting officers to return fire, hitting the man multiple times, police said. He was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana, where he was pronounced dead.
Two officers were taken to a nearby hospital for observation, police said.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.
The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, per department policy. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating.
