Teen charged in connection with shooting of 2-year-old boy in North Lawndale home

A 17-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the shooting of a 2-year-old boy Thursday in a North Lawndale home.

Officers were called just after 4 p.m. to a home in the 3800 block of West 14th Street, where they found the toddler suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Chicago police said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he underwent two surgeries and remained in critical condition as of Thursday night, according to police and community activist Andrew Holmes.

“This happened during a gathering from what I understand,” Holmes said. He spoke with one of the boy’s family members, who Holmes said was “very distraught” at the hospital Thursday night.

The teen is charged as a juvenile and faces one felony count of obstructing justice and destroying evidence, and one misdemeanor count of child endangerment. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

A woman declined to comment Friday morning when a reporter knocked on the door of the home where the shooting occurred.

Many details of the incident remained scant a day later, but Holmes add, “We’ve just got to be cautious around our babies and [know] who has these weapons.”
