The victim of a drive-by shooting Tuesday near Stockton was a woman who gained notoriety as the teen driver in a livestreamed crash that killed her sister.
The San Joaquin County sheriff’s office identified the slain woman as Obdulia Sanchez, 26, and confirmed she was the driver in the 2017 case.
Sanchez was one of two people shot around 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in Garden Acres, a residential neighborhood abutting Stockton. She was taken to a hospital, where she died. The sheriff’s office gave no information on possible suspect or motive.
In the 2017 case, Sanchez, 18 at the time, was driving a Buick Century on a rural road near Los Banos, with two younger teens in the backseat. She reportedly swerved onto the shoulder, overcorrected and crashed through a wire fence; the car overturned in a field. Her 14-year-old sister, Jacqueline, was killed, and the other girl was badly injured.
Sanchez’s blood alcohol level 90 minutes after the crash was 0.10 percent, investigators said. It also came out that she was livestreaming on Instagram before, during and after the crash. The video, widely shared on social media, showed her singing and adjusting the phone, at times apparently taking both hands off the wheel.
She pleaded no contest to charges including gross vehicular manslaughter, drunken driving and child endangerment and was sentenced in 2018 to six years and four months in prison.
The prosecutor had requested the maximum sentence, 12 years. He contended her behavior in the aftermath of the crash showed her to be callous and lacking in remorse — swearing, kicking and spitting at the emergency responders and declaring she was “hella drunk,” and “I don’t care if I go to jail for life.”
Sanchez was released in September 2019, having served 26 months. Three weeks later, she was arrested after allegedly leading Stockton police on a chase.
