A 15-year-old boy has died after getting into difficulty in a section of the River Wyre said to be a popular diving spot among local youths.

Lancashire Police were called at around 2.30pm on Saturday to the riverbank near Garstang Cricket Club.

Officers found the boy ‘being given CPR by members of the public’ by the water.

He was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition but died on Sunday.

A witness said he ‘saw a police officer interviewing a tearful young girl among a group of backpackers’ after the area was cordoned off.

Retired journalist Nick Hill told the BBC the incident happened in a ‘small area of invitingly calm water’ behind a floodgate with several danger warnings around it.

He said he had previously seen ‘young boys leaping in from a high vantage point despite the obvious hazard’.

Official flood monitoring data suggests the water may have been unusually shallow at the time.

At the nearest monitoring station, a few hundred metres away, the Wyre has been the lowest point of its ‘normal range’ of depth for at least a week.

The incident happened around four miles upstream from St Michael’s on Wyre, where Nicola Bulley was last seen before drowning in the river in 2023.

A subsequent inquest ruled she accidentally fell into the water, possibly suffering cold-water shock which caused her to inhale water and drown in seconds.

Anyone with information about the incident leading up to the boy’s death this weekend has been urged to contact Lancashire Police.

‘Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly distressing time’, the force added.
