Eastern Colorado could see up to tennis-ball-sized hail and 70 mph winds amid a severe thunderstorm watch on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Strong storms are expected Tuesday evening along the Colorado-Kansas border, including parts of Bent, Kit Carson, Prowers, Cheyenne, Kiowa and Yuma counties, according to the severe thunderstorm watch. The watch will remain in effect through 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the weather service.
Severe hail up to 2 1/2 inches in diameter, roughly the size of a tennis ball, and damaging winds up to 70 mph are possible across eastern Colorado, forecasters said.
On the other side of the state, over and near the mountains, storms will produce gusty outflow winds up to 45 mph, lightning and heavy rainfall, according to a hazardous weather outlook from the weather service.
Rain showers and thunderstorms are most likely in the Denver area before 8 p.m., but no thunderstorm watches or warnings had been issued for the metro area as of 3 p.m. Tuesday.
