The faithful celebrated Maundy Thursday and look forward to Good Friday services

Christians across Los Angeles County celebrated Maundy Thursday and many will attend church on Good Friday, April 18, to honor the day when Jesus died on the cross. Easter Sunday, the most holy day in Christianity, will mark the day when Jesus rose from the dead, according to Christian tradition.

Among the many churches who held services on a cloudy and cool evening on April 17, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper was celebrated by Rev. Jose Magaña at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Hollywood. He was joined by retired Cardinal Roger Mahony. During the service, the feet of 12 people were washed, a tradition for the service known as Maundy Thursday.

In Christianity, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples before the Last Supper to show followers to serve one another.

Following Maundy Thursday — also called Holy Thursday — many churches including Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican and Methodist mark Good Friday with fasting, penance and reflection on Jesus’ death. It is the only day in the year in which no Mass is celebrated. It’s a solemn day that calls for fasting and abstinence. A wooden cross is used at some churches to allow the religious to pray and meditate.

Many churches, including Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist and Oriental Orthodox churches, observe Good Friday with special services.

Services on Thursday marked the end of the Lenten season and the first of the three services — Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday — that lead up to Easter Sunday. Easter is on April 20 this year.
