The north-south divide is real as UK sees mixed weather this weekend

Most people across the UK expect the weather in the north to be cooler and wetter than in the south.

But this weekend is turning that stereotype on its head as we see a massively mixed bag of weather conditions over the next few days.

A yellow weather warning, only issued yesterday afternoon, was in place for south Wales and the west of England until the early hours of this morning.

And the Met Office is warning that heavy rain is ‘never too far away’ for large parts of England and Wales this weekend.

On the other hand, central and north western parts of the UK are set to see well above average temperatures of 25-26°C in some places – giving northern England and Scotland a nice, final blast of summer.

Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert explained: ‘Repeated areas of rain are likely to affect southern Britain over the next few days, generating some localised impacts into the weekend.

‘We currently have a yellow weather warning for rain in place, and there’s potential for further warnings this weekend.

‘It’s a different story further north though, as high pressure brings warmer and sunnier conditions, with higher-than-average temperatures, particularly across parts of western Scotland.

‘Eastern areas are likely to be cooler and at times, cloudier due to winds blowing off the North Sea.’

Deputy chief meteorologist Dan Harris added: ‘Reminiscent of this time last week, the forecast for later this weekend comes with larger uncertainties than average.

‘This is due to a more complex than usual meteorological pattern involving multiple corridors of heavy, locally thundery rain revolving around a slow moving area of low pressure.

‘We are keeping warnings under review, and will look to issue them over the weekend as confidence increases.’

Here’s the current Met Office forecast for the weekend:

Friday

Rain moves northwards overnight but turning more light and patchy as it does so.

Showers could move into the southeast by dawn as low cloud persists across the north east.

Saturday

Showers across the south will move their way northwards across England and Wales.

Drier and brighter elsewhere away from the north east but feeling warm in light winds.

Sunday

Heavy and thundery rain returns for some on Sunday, before turning more showery on Monday with brighter spells.
