The Van Nuys FlyAway bus service to LAX has served more than 24 million rides
“Since starting 50 years ago with just a single shuttle, the Van Nuys FlyAway has become the go-to commuting choice for millions of guests seeking convenient and reliable nonstop trips from the San Fernando Valley to LAX,” said David Reich, deputy executive director of mobility strategy, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) in a statement on Thursday, July 10.
On the 50th anniversary of the Van Nuys FlyAway, Reich called it a “model of transportation innovation and sustainability for our region, and it will continue to be for years to come.”
Starting with just 141 riders on its first trip on July 10, 1975, the shuttle route served more than 275,000 riders in its first year, and more than 1.1 million riders in 2024. First launched on July 10, 1975, the service has become a popular way for Angelenos to travel between the San Fernando Valley and LAX. In a press release, officials noted that the Van Nuys route has “provided guests with more than 24 million rides to LAX since its opening.”
Another big number in the history of the Van Nuys FlyAway was LAWA’s decision in December 2004 to invest $34 million to open a full-service bus terminal on Woodley Avenue in the Valley, with more than 3,000 parking spaces.

Those projects were followed in March 2006 with the opening of the LAX FlyAway bus service in downtown Los Angeles at Union Station. According to a statement from LAWA, if including both the Van Nuys and Union Station routes, the airport shuttles in 2024 saved 3,521 metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions and reduced personal vehicle travel by 29.5 million vehicle miles traveled.
