Theft suspect lost foot trying to jump train to elude cops in Englewood, police say

A man who police say was stealing property from a freight train lost his foot trying to hop a train to elude police Friday morning in Englewood, according to police.

About 6:40 a.m., officers saw multiple people taking property from train cars in the 6100 block of South Stewart Avenue, Chicago police said.

As the officers approached, the thieves all fled in different directions, including a 27-year-old man who was hurt as he tried boarding a moving train in the 300 block of West 60th Street, police and Chicago Fire Department officials said.

That man, who lost his foot, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition, according to the fire and police departments.

Five people, including the injured man, were arrested, officials said. No other injuries were reported, and no charges have been announced.

Metra Southwest Service trains were delayed by about an hour but were on the move again by 8 a.m., according to a Metra spokesperson .
