Three killed after BMW swerves off road with woman arrested

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after three people were killed in a single-car crash on the A46 in Leicestershire.

The group of four were heading south in a blue BMW 5 series in the early hours of yesterday morning when it veered off the road north-east of Leicester.

Police were called to the scene by the fourth person in the car, who suffered minor injuries, at around 1am.

Officers later confirmed a 37-year-old woman was arrested before being released from custody under investigation.

The A46 was closed in both directions in the immediate aftermath of the crash, with the road only fully reopening around 21 hours later.

Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) detectives stayed by the roadside to gather evidence overnight and into Sunday morning.

Pictures from the scene show green fences blocking off the site of the crash, and a vehicle covered with blue tarpaulin on the back of a recovery truck.

Leicestershire Police have asked drivers who were in the area between 12.30am and 1.05am to look at their dashcam footage.

Detective Constable Madeleine Hayes from the force’s SCIU said: ‘This is a tragic incident with three people losing their lives.

‘We know the car was travelling on the A46 from Nottingham. I’d like to speak to anyone who was driving in the area who may have witnessed events leading up to the collision.’

She added: ‘We are working to understand what led the car to leave the carriageway and any information from witnesses may be helpful in establishing this.’
