Three prison officers stabbed in attack with ‘improvised weapon’

Two prison officers were hospitalised after an inmate stabbed them with an ‘improvised weapon’, it has been reported.
Another guard was also wounded in the attack at HMP Isle of Wight.
One officer, aged 32, sustained injuries in the face, while another 28-year-old was stabbed in his right arm, Island Echo reported.
The assault allegedly occurred in the prison’s inpatient unit on Thursday.
A police investigation into the incident is now underway, but no arrests have yet been made.

The suspected prisoner is thought to have now been transferred to the facility’s segregation and facilitation unit.
Both hospitalised prison workers have since been discharged.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said: ‘Attacks on our staff are cowardly and unacceptable which is why we push for the strongest possible punishments.’
Hampshire Constabulary said in a statement: ‘We have received reports of a serious assault at HMP Isle of Wight where a 32-year-old man has received facial injuries.
‘An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the incident.’
HMP Isle of Wight houses more than 1,000 prisoners across two sites on the island.
A recent report showed that assaults on prison staff across the UK had reached record levels.
An estimated 10,477 incidents were reported in the year up to June 2025.
Ministry of Justice figures showed that there were a total of 411 deaths in custody in the year up to September 2025, a 30 per cent increase on the previous year.
Nearly a quarter of incidents (97) were self inflicted, a nine per cent uptick.
